In the twenty odd years I’ve lived in the Florida Keys, I had never spotted a key deer in person, even after going on a hiking expedition with my girlfriend to two different nature preserves on Big Pine Key. On my way back from Key West the other day, I finally saw one by the side of the highway. I thought it was a stray dog at first, or maybe even some sort of inflatable mock-up.
